After more than a year-long collaboration with the World Bank Book Project, the 30 000 books donated by the World Bank Book Project are being distributed in the Durban area in South Africa.

Destined for more than 25 schools, most of the books are for Primary Schools. Several thousand books are also for Secondary School reference and textbook needs. The Margot Fonteyn Secondary Schoo from Klaarwater in the KwaZulu-Natal province is the distributing center for the books in collaboration with Learning Academy Worldwide.

The books form part of the Academy's literacy improvement initiatives in South Africa.

Three big awards for Innovation

Three projects from the 2014 Innovation in Education summit were presented with the ISTEEM awards. Innovative Solutions in Technology that Embraces and Enhances Meaning (ISTEEM) is the first of an annual award that will be made available for initiatives within Education and development in Southern Africa. The Awards totaled R15 000 and were sponsored by Learning Academy Worldwide, Beijing Royal School, Royal Haskoning DHV and Communications Management Support (Pty) Ltd.

Mr Terrence Martin hosted the event, on behalf of Learning Academy Worldwide with support from Mobile Support Leader, Desmond van Rensburg.

"It was absolutely worth it traveling down from Johannesburg to this event," Mr Martin explained. "It is clear that the gesture means a great deal to the recipients."

Mr James Williams demonstrated the Learning Academy Worldwide tech-solution for pre-reading strategies at the Unesco Mobile Learning Week in Paris last month.

Part of the M-Ubuntu project in South Africa, the teacher-lead, off-the-grid solution will stream curriculum-related media-rich content to mobile devices.

Using recycled phones donated by Sprint, USA, refurbished routers and MacBooks, Mr Williams created a local internet that works within the parameters of the school where, especially rural schools with unreliable internet connection, can access curriculum-related content in a browser-based interface.

Several schools in South Africa will switched on their own internet at the beginning of the 2nd quarter of the country’s academic year.

A professional development program for young Mobitechs and Teachers will also be launched as part of the roll out starting in April, 2014
